Presidents Message Fall/Winter 2014

Okanagan Humane Society

Dear Members and Friends:

We do have some good news! Recently a meeting was held at the Kelowna SPCA to tackle the cat crisis. Animal groups, veterinarians, SPCA staff are all working together to try and change this unfortunate giant sized problem. The mindset that cats in particular, have no value must change. More humane education and people with pets taking more responsibility by getting their pets spayed or neutered is essential. There is financial help available in the community.

Please check out our fundraiser and the various events being held to help the Okanagan Humane Society continue our spay and neuter program.

Many thanks to all the wonderful volunteers and helpers who make things happen. To veterinarians and their support staff who go out of their way to make this program possible. A HUGE THANK YOU to the businesses and individuals who support us by donations for raffles and silent auctions, we very much appreciate your generosity!

We would like to show appreciation to the following people and businesses:

  • Bosley’s
  • Buckerfields
  • Petsmart
  • Total Pet

for their support in showcasing adoptable pets.

Tri-Lake Animal Hospital for their cupcake day, which raised $92.65.

Central Okanagan Regional District, ICBC, Provincial Employees Community Services Fund, Nature’s Fare, Susan Wort of Fashion Foundations, Return-It-Centre Winfield.

Jan Bigelow and Karen Merwin through “Dollars for Doers” Telus program.
Hazel and helpers at their spring and fall garage sales, and antiques and collectables sale in Vernon, which raised $6891.50.
Taylor, Tyler and River of Oyama raised $55 for the Humane Society with their lemonade, bake and garage sale last spring. Well done! Our society is grateful for everyone’s help and hard work!

Video Interview with Volunteer Helena Pol

The Okanagan Humane Society would like to thank Joe and Cindy from JCVdude for interviewing one of our volunteers, Helena at Buckerfields on Saturday.

Helena has been volunteering her time for the society since our organization first started in 1996 by rescuing, providing foster care and finding homes for a large number of cats.

Featured Pet: Mitzi (Adopted)

mitzi cat for adoption

DOB – July 5, 2008

Mitzi did come from a home where she was very loved. Unfortunately her people’s situation changed and poor Mitzi has to find a new home. Mitzi’s people are now homeless. They had no idea what to do with their cat so they were moving her around to different people’s places. Some places she had to stay in a closet because the people were allergic to cats, and a few days she spent living in a car.

The last resort was to let her go on the streets if they could not find a place for her.

Unfortunately she has had a tendonectomy so she would not do well defending herself on the street. This is not widely practiced by many Vets.

Mitzi has always been an indoor cat and must go to an indoor only home. Mitzi is very friendly and gets along very well with other cats and small dogs. She has never been around a big dog.

If you want to meet Mitzi, you can visit her at Total Pet in Kelowna.

2014 OHS Total Pet Golf Tournament & Silent Auction Fundraiser

Last year the Okanagan Humane Society received over 900 applications for spay/neuter financial assistance from low income families. We were able to help 771 families. As of the end of April of this year we had already received over 300 applications.

Although we have no shelter or staff, we manage to adopt out in excess of 170 kittens and cats every year. These are fostered in our own homes, mostly at our own expense and are the by-product of unaltered pets. More often than not these unaltered pets produce more kittens than homes are available for, therefore they become the basis of new colonies of unwanted and forgotten felines. And the circle continues.

People turn to us when all other avenues have been exhausted. We go way above and beyond to help as many as possible but the line is always longer than our purse strings allow.

We hope to raise enough money with our golf tournament to help 100 low income families spay/neuter their pets. We can not do our work without fundraisers like this one and the fundraisers are not a success without the generous people who donate their money and their time to participate.

Please, help us reach our goal. Enter today for a fun-filled day of Texas Scramble (best ball) golf at Sunset Ranch Golf Course on June 6 at 1:00 pm (registration is at noon) and help us lower the pet overpopulation today.

Golfer fee is $150.00 per person including use of an electric golf cart and the meal. Meal only tickets are available for $50.00 each. Entry forms are also available at all Total Pet Stores.

OHS Thanks Veterinary Clinics

We at the Okanagan Humane Society would like to thank the Shuswap Veterinary Clinic for their generous donation above and beyond the continuing discount on their spay and neuter services. It is through veterinary clinics like their’s that we are able to continue our work assisting low income families with spaying and neutering costs.

We would also like to give recognition to Dr. Moira and her staff who fundraised for several months to spend 9 days in Mexico this January. They brought lots of medical supplies with them and spent the 9 days treating stray dogs for free.

It was both heartbreaking and very rewarding’ said one member of the staff. The clinic’s effort was recognized on CHBC.
